Because Cisco IP phones are frequently powered by Ethernet cable through a power over Ethernet switch, they do not come with a power source. People without access to a POE switch will need to utilize a power supply to power the phone. In 2005, the CP-PWR-CUBE-3 third generation power supply replaced the CP-PWR-CUBE-2 and CP-PWR-CUBE as the required power source for all Cisco IP phones. The only visual difference between the CP-PWR-CUBE-3 and its predecessors is the color of the plastic tip that surrounds the power plug that is placed into the phone's rear.
